My goal was to work on my compound lifts as I wanted to improve them. After a solid warm-up (something I always do), I started my workout.&nbsp;Once I was done, I did my cool-down, which consists mainly of yoga movements adapted to the muscles I worked on. I did the same that day and at the end did overhead shoulder stretches while holding a stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s when it happened. My shoulder muscles must have been too tired or tight. Either way, I didn&#8217;t feel any problem in particular. Right at the end, basically my last stretch, my humeral head popped out of the joint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My body <strong>started to panic<\/strong> once I tried to elevate my arm but couldn&#8217;t. I moved it around to get a feeling of the situation, trying to establish if it was serious and if something was broken or ruptured. It seemed OK (as far anything can be OK at that point). <strong>Panic struck again<\/strong>, bringing its buddies physical <strong>pain<\/strong>, <strong>fear<\/strong> and <strong>sweat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage Pain: Going Into Survival Mode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the pain started to arise, it hit me hard &#8211; and I am used to painful situations from my martial arts practices and competitions. Within moments it went from extreme pain to my body starting to shut down. I was starting to black out slowly. Thanks to my BJJ background (see <a href=\"http:\/\/taoofstefan.com\/blog\/main\/lifestyle\/flanders-bjj-cup-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/taoofstefan.com\/blog\/main\/lifestyle\/no-way-out-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/taoofstefan.com\/blog\/sport-fitness\/bjj\/no-way-out-iv-no-gi-fun-in-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>) I was familiar with this feeling and started to manage pain with my go-to <strong>survival task points<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>accepting the situation as is,<\/li><li>assert the situation,<\/li><li>find a way to improve your situation,<\/li><li>take action.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something I have to do several times a week in practice. The stakes are certainly not that high but the symptoms &#8211; pain, panic, fear &#8211; are similar to above situation. The process of finding a solution is nevertheless basically the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>I repeat this is not medical advice, don&#8217;t treat such an emergency yourself and seek professional medical advice as soon as possible.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage Pain: Getting My Body Back Under Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When the <strong>pain was hitting me hard<\/strong> and I started to<strong> black out slowly<\/strong>, I instantly used the greatest tool I have at my disposal to get control over anything in my body or mind and hence manage pain or stress: <strong>breath<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I focused on my <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"breath (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/taoofstefan.com\/blog\/main\/lifestyle\/biohacking\/box-breathing\/\" target=\"_blank\">breath<\/a>, people helped me to stabilize my current position (by now I was lying on the flor). Once they figured nothing was blocked or ruptured, they relocated my shoulder, they send me back home to rest for a couple of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterwards, I did start with physical therapy. I was very lucky. Now we are more than a year later and my shoulder is fine. No tissue seems to have been <g class=\"gr_ gr_259 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"259\" data-gr-id=\"259\">rupture<\/g>d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I worked hard to get back to my initial strength and I am still not back to that point. But both stability and mobility of my shoulder joint are better than they ever were. <strong>I made it my priority and work on it daily.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this ever happens to you&nbsp;<strong>make sure to not overdo it, take this seriously and handle it with care, patience and let your dislocated shoulder rest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage Pain With The Power Of Breath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While lying on the floor, I continued to breathe in a very controlled and focused manner.<\/strong> This, when done correctly, will reduce the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, the pain but also the raising panic, fear and confusion got better. In order to be able to pull this off, you need to <strong><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/therandomcommuteshow.com\/podcast\/episode11\/\" target=\"_blank\">create awareness<\/a> of your breathing<\/strong>. All of them do it in a different way<g class=\"gr_ gr_18 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"18\" data-gr-id=\"18\">.<\/g><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mindfulness <\/strong>is the art of being in the now, no matter what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meditation <\/strong>helps you to focus on nothing and let go of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\"><strong>Yoga<\/strong><\/g>, depending on what you do, will create <strong>body-mind awareness<\/strong>. In a stressful or painful situation, as this is the case, all three of them come in handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my current studies of yoga, mindfulness and overall holistic lifestyle performance, the power of breath is the key to success in my opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Process To Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Back home I started to help my shoulder to heal. MSM (<a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/msm-supplement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joint care<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/theshawnstevensonmodel.com\/7-benefits-of-msm-the-miracle-supplement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anti-inflammatory effects<\/a>)&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.organicfacts.net\/health-benefits\/other\/cordyceps.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cordyceps<\/a>&nbsp;(anti-inflammatory effects).&nbsp;I also &#8211; even with reluctance &#8211; took medical painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills. To help heal my shoulder even faster, I bought turmeric pills and added them to my regimen.
