The most important thing that does happen is that caffeine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3878772\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">docks on adenosine receptors<\/a>. Usually, the body doesn&#8217;t just let anyone thing dock or unlock a receptor unless you have the right key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine can do this because it is very similar in structure to adenosine. Normally, when adenosine attaches to its receptors your neural activity would slow down and you&#8217;d feel sleepy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activating or rather blocking those receptors with caffeine will increase the activity of your sympathetic nervous system (you might know as fight-or-flight). To make this even better, caffeine consumption has been linked to <a href=\"http:\/\/taoofstefan.com\/blog\/main\/lifestyle\/coffee-makes-you-healthier\/\" target=\"_blank\">many positive health effects<\/a> too, while the negative health effects are existent but not too impactful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positive Health Effects of Caffeine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The list of positive (health) effects is very long, I&#8217;ll focus on the most important ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We scratched this in the initial part of the article already, that caffeine can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19733954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve alertness and your attention<\/a>. This seems to be especially true for people who usually don&#8217;t administer caffeine to their system, but is also true &#8211; to a lesser extent &#8211; for people who have built up a tolerance already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18061746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lack of sleep<\/a> usually makes people less productive in their tasks, especially if they need to focus a lot. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25527035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">higher dosages of caffeine<\/a>, this can be temporarily remedied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caffeine for strength, endurance and performance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Caffeine can increase your strength, overall power output and your endurance. That is great to hear for all the athletes out there. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11583104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase in performance doesn&#8217;t stem from actually making your stronger, but rather because with caffeine in your system you can perform at a higher level<\/a> (higher speed, more weight, longer training session).<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?pid=S1984-82502016000400685&amp;script=sci_arttext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scielo.br\/scielo.php?pid=S1984-82502016000400685&amp;script=sci_arttext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> showed that caffeine consumption can lower your pain perception in tests of muscular endurance. To get to those effects you have to consume 5 mg\/kg prior to your workout (around 60-90 minutes). The good news goes further. It seems as though caffeine can even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3746074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suppress amyloid levels in our body<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amyloids cause inflammation in the brain and lead to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. While this has only been shown in mice, let&#8217;s be hopeful that it extends to humans too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caffeine to combat cancer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many big studies out there that looked into the effects of coffee and caffeine on different types of cancer. These studies showed that 4-6 cups of coffee can have plenty of <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert sel gr_spell gr_replaced gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">beneficial<\/g> health impacts. In other words, in a not so distant future, we won&#8217;t be able to finance the treatments for such health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why it is great news for all of us to hear that coffee and caffeine have the potential to decrease the risk for T2DM in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16443894\" target=\"_blank\">younger and middle-aged women<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a meta-analysis it has been concluded that coffee and caffeine intake &#8220;might significantly reduce the incidence of T2DM&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a side note: it seems that a well-rounded nutrition combined with some regular <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">movement<\/g> is the best way to combat the metabolic syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects of Caffeine<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated right at the beginning of this article, caffeine is a drug. Like many drugs, caffeine comes with a few side effects. The peak of symptoms arises <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert sel gr_spell gr_replaced gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">within<\/g> the first 3 days, and they disappear again after anything between 2 to 9 days from going off of caffeine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headaches seem to be by far the most common withdrawal symptom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other side effects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other potential side effects, mainly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>increased\u00a0potential for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3805807\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insomnia<\/a><\/li><li>increased risk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4668773\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anxiety<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24203773\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spikes<\/a> in or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15834273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small increased risk<\/a> of blood pressure<\/li><li>an increase of cortisol when a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18458357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><g class=\"gr_ gr_20 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"20\" data-gr-id=\"20\">higher<\/g> dose of caffeine is administered<\/a> (800 mg, around 7 cups of coffee)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While this sounds very dramatic, most studies showed that these potential side effects are uncommon if caffeine is taken as coffee (versus pills).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overdosage and Toxicity Level<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Overdosing on caffeine, especially if you drink it with coffee, is rare and a real challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The toxicity level for caffeine depends on your body. As we have seen for most people up 600 mg seem to be fine. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/caffeine\/art-20045678\" target=\"_blank\">mayo clinic sees 400 mg<\/a> as the sweet spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to die of <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">caffeine,<\/g> you have to resort to much higher levels than that. There have been incidents of death by caffeine after ingesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5661792\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 g<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/amjforensicmedicine\/Abstract\/2013\/12000\/Fatal_Caffeine_Overdose__A_Case_Report_and_Review.8.aspx\">12 g<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t happen by accident any more and shouldn&#8217;t frighten you. The person who killed <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">themself<\/g> with 10 g used 200 mg tablets to do so. That&#8217;s 50 tablets in\u00a0<g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">total,<\/g> or 50 to 100 cups of regular coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overdosing on caffeine is much easier though. Most people will feel anxious, but they might also feel confused, have seizures, fever or\u00a0<g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">stomac<\/g> pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount depends on gender, age, weight and is very personal. Having a few cups of coffee probably won&#8217;t do any harm. That being said, be cautious and keep in mind that other sources dietary sources with caffeine exist too:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>especially energy drinks and soft drinks are high in caffeine<\/li><li>but also tea (black, green) or chocolate contain it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caffeine Cycling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, caffeine has much more potential for your health than it might have negative consequences. One of the things I suggest doing, besides consuming coffee with care, is to cycle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that after a few weeks or months, you go off of caffeine for a while. This could be anything ranging from 5 &#8211; 10 days in my opinion. This gives your body some time to get <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">everything<\/g> out and you will see how used you have become to coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;re done with it, just slowly start with you coffee again. You&#8217;ll see that you need less to get a boost and it will taste great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My personal cycling plan is linked to my fitness routine. After every routine (which might last anything between 9 &#8211; 16 weeks), I cycle off for 7 &#8211; 10 days. I use this time to fully rest and recover from my workouts, try to get in more sleep.
